As a leading scientific membership organisation it is vital for the Institute of Physics (IOP) to communicate the benefits of membership; both to attract new members and to enable existing members to get the most out of their membership.
Using design sprint methodology, Amphio and IOP began work with the goal of helping prospective members understand the value of IOP membership. IOP was driven to communicate the member offer in a more compelling way.
During the sprint process, we got to meet existing IOP members, and it became clear that first‑person stories told by members would be a compelling way of articulating the value of membership and showing the diversity of IOP’s role in physics. This assumption was confirmed in a round of prototype user testing and the decision was made to create six short films about IOP members.
We wanted each film to focus on a different IOP member, telling the story of their career in physics and how becoming a member of the IOP has helped them along the way. Seeing real members discuss their IOP membership in the context of their own personal journey brings a very engaging, human perspective to the subject.
Each film was captured in the subject’s place of work or study, as it was important to give a real insight into their lives, and make each story feel personal and distinctive.
After a successful draft edit for the first film, it was the addition of bespoke music, created in‑house, that helped bring out the depth of the stories and gave the films a driving energy, making them feel more cohesive. IOP was excited by the addition of the soundtrack, and looked forward to new music for each member story.
The final output is of the highest quality. Amphio puts each film through a robust review cycle and quality control process. Input from our designers, producers, and our clients is crucial at this stage as their combined editorial vision is key to the way Amphio works with content.
‘Amphio were an excellent agency to work with collaboratively throughout this project, from the sprint process to working on the video production. We’re very happy with the final films — they help to bring the value of IOP membership to life’

Collaboration with IOP was key to the success of these films. We were able to establish effective ways of working together thanks to having a stable, close‑knit team with clear roles and responsibilities. After a successful launch there are plans to shoot subsequent member stories on an ongoing basis. Watch this space!
