Video in the cloud
A media library designed for the performing arts

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO), one of the largest performing arts organisations in the US, installed a new camera system in 2016 and rapidly expanded their ability to capture concerts. Since then, the Amphio team has worked closely with the ISO to make their multi-camera recordings of performances viable over the long-term.

ISO originally approached Amphio to discuss possible front-end apps and integrations to promote viewership of their concerts. Despite multiple opportunities, Amphio soon realised that these ideas could only gain short-term audience engagement. To maximise the value of the performance footage, we drilled down to the underlying need for the ISO: a long-term solution for storage and organisation of its vast amounts of digital media content.

We quickly learnt that existing services overlooked special requirements for rich media files. The assets for any ISO concert contained multiple performances; for example a solo piano recital plus a full orchestral performance – discrete events that require discrete metadata, e.g. composer, composition and instrumentation. With multiple cameras and microphones, managing the correspondence between assets and performances within existing systems was very complex.

ISO also needed to maintain control and ownership over the content, whilst making it accessible to global production teams. We asked, how can the ISO leverage freelance video editors whilst maintaining ownership of their content? Existing solutions were overcomplicated and too hard to use – limiting the output of engaging video content.

The ISO Library

Our solution was to develop the ISO Library, a cloud platform designed specifically for musical performance that could easily store, transcode and access rich media files. This cloud-based approach was advantageous for three reasons; first, it allowed the content to be accessed from anywhere; second, it reduced risk of data-loss; and third, it created opportunity for automating workflows to minimise production overheads.

‘Amphio’s cost effective model for data storage, transcoding, and streaming enables us to only pay for what we use, as we use it. As a non-profit organisation, with peaks of activity during certain times of the year, this is a very attractive model’

– Daniel Beckley
Vice President & General Manager, ISO

In parallel we developed powerful search and metadata tools that enabled users with no video experience to easily find and extract events from the library. The Concert Upload tool automatically catalogues raw and processed media and simplifies time-based metadata marking of e.g. individual movements or solo recitals. Combined with Elastic Search, this detailed library allows for fast and frictionless retrieval of the most relevant material in formats suited to the user’s needs, without technical transcoding expertise.

‘Amphio’s collaborative approach through the entire software development cycle is far superior to anything I have seen (and I used to run a software company myself!)’

– Daniel Beckley
Vice President & General Manager, ISO

The Library API has been carefully designed so the ISO architecture remains flexible as it grows, whilst maintaining safe ownership over their content. We are delighted to continue our partnership with the team at Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and support their mission of bringing world-class performances to a global digital audience.
